Meet Matthew Blackburn
Specialised Criminal Defence Lawyer
Director/Principal Lawyer
Following the completion of his Bachelor of Commerce at Curtin University in 2011 and his subsequent Juris Doctor at Murdoch University in 2015, Matthew delved into the realm of legal practice. He honed his skills alongside a prominent criminal defence barrister before being admitted to practice in 2017.
Having worked at two esteemed criminal defence firms, his scope of experience spans various criminal jurisdictions across Western Australia, from the Magistrates Court to the Court of Appeal.
In 2023, upon the establishment of Magenta Legal by Her Honour Magistrate Melita Medcalf (Founder) in 2021, Matthew assumed the role of Principal Lawyer determined to build a practice rooted in integrity and compassion. His tireless efforts have extended beyond the confines of the Perth metropolitan area, reaching communities in regional areas from Esperance to Kununurra, advocating for fairness and equitable treatment under the law.
Matthew's impact in the legal landscape is underscored by his active participation in the Magistrates, Children's, and District Courts, where he has steered a multitude of trials, bail applications, and sentencing hearings all with the aim of ensuring that every individual receives a fair and just legal process. Notably, he has showcased his prowess as both junior and lead counsel in multiple jury trials.
His adept skills in negotiation have enabled him to secure favourable outcomes for his clients, often through the careful downgrading and discontinuation of charges.
Moreover, Matthew's profound expertise has been instrumental in several significant cases, including the successful appeal against sentence in Serukai v State of Western Australia. Notably, his unwavering dedication was evident in the pivotal role he played in the Court of Appeal case of Scott Austic, where his collaboration with Dr. Clint Hampson contributed to securing a just outcome for Mr Austic in the face of challenging circumstances.
Matthew hold an unwavering belief in the importance of safeguarding the rights of all individuals, irrespective of their background or social standing, whilst recognising the importance of second chances and rehabilitation.
Whilst our home is now in Perth our experience in the Pilbara region edcuated us on the barriers to obtaining quality legal services in regional communities across Western Australia, we are dedicated to change this.
Magenta Legal is committed to ensuring clients who live in regional and remote areas across the Pilbara, Kimberley, Goldfields, Great Southern and Perth Metro receive exceptional service, regardless of location.
